The 1978 portrait looks less intense than the 1986. the 1986 looks as though it is out of control while the 1978 seems very mellow. the 1986 uses and dark background with bright colors while the 1978 uses bright colors everywhere.

I think warhol made these to express fear, maybe anger. the 1978 has a skull next to warhol's, thes could show a fear of death. the 1986 gives a sense that he is out of control.
